Helping Others: A Gift or A Trap?

Updated: Jun 30, 2024

We often hear phrases like

"share your knowledge with others, it's not a gift unless shared" and "it's a gift, so share it with other people."

These statements emphasize the importance of helping others by sharing our knowledge, skills, or resources. However, it's essential to question whether our actions are genuine acts of help or if we're falling into the trap of fixing others' problems.

To ensure we are genuinely helping, we must consider the types of people we should support and how we offer assistance. It's crucial to distinguish between

providing a temporary solution and fostering long-term growth and development.

By understanding the art of helping, we can empower others to overcome obstacles and grow as individuals.

## Identifying the Right Recipients

We should focus our efforts on those who face struggles yet continue to give their best effort.

These individuals demonstrate resilience and courage in the face of adversity, making them worthy of our assistance. By providing them with the necessary tools, such as a ladder to scale a wall, we empower them to overcome obstacles.

Another group we should help are those who actively seek assistance. These individuals display humility and a genuine desire to learn, demonstrating that they can set aside their ego and embrace the role of a student, regardless of age or experience. In helping these individuals, we create a collaborative learning environment that benefits both parties.

## Lessons from Personal Experiences

In my own life, I've encountered situations where my eagerness to help was taken advantage of. Classmates would rely heavily on my assistance without putting in the effort to learn themselves, or they didn't seem genuinely interested in learning, viewing my help as a means to an end. These experiences taught me the importance of being selective with whom I choose to help.

## The Importance of Selectivity

While it may sound counterintuitive, I've realized that not everyone is open to receiving guidance or willing to put in the effort required for growth. It's crucial to focus our energy on helping those who demonstrate resilience, curiosity, and a sincere desire to learn. By doing so, we can ensure that our efforts contribute to meaningful growth and development, rather than simply enabling dependence or complacency.

## Empowering Others

In the end, the art of helping should be centered on empowering others to overcome obstacles and grow as individuals. By providing guidance and support, we can inspire growth and learning without falling into the trap of fixing or enabling.

As a student of stoicism living by the principles of the Stoics, I believe that understanding the difference between helping and fixing is crucial for creating a society that values personal growth, resilience, and learning from one another. This philosophy extends beyond mere theory; it has practical implications in our daily interactions with others.

## Actionable Steps

1. Be selective with whom you help, focusing on those who demonstrate a sincere desire to learn and grow.

2. Provide guidance and support that fosters long-term growth and development, rather than temporary solutions.

3. Reflect on your own experiences to discern between helping and fixing.

4. Continuously evaluate your actions and their impact on others' growth.

By following these steps and applying stoic principles, we can ensure that our efforts to help others are genuine and contribute to meaningful growth and learning.
